WWE Anti-Dress Code sign now

As you may or may not now, on or slightly before August 9th, 2004, World Wrestling Entertainment established a dress code for it's wrestlers and other employees. The code is as follows:

The dress code requires slacks and a dress shirt, with a tie and suit being optional.

The main reason given for this implementation is to make their performers and other workers look professional. However, Vince McMahon, John "Johnny Ace" Laurinaitis, and others in charge of the WWE obviously have not taken into consideration the long hours that their employees spend on the road, driving in cars, riding in planes, trying to make time to work out regularly while traveling, etc. When any of the workers, especially the WWE wrestlers, are spending so much time traveling and making money for Vince and the other heads of WWE, it should be their right to do so in comfort, which is hard to do when they are forced to dress in a way that they are not always, if ever, comfortable with.

Uniforms and dress codes are understandable in jobs that are repetitive and easy to travel to, where people are expected to look professional. However, professional wrestling is not one of those businesses. Wrestling is entertainment, pure and simple, much like movies and television shows. Hollywood might have "suggestions" for how to dress, what to look like, etc., but no one would ever dare tell these actors and actresses how they MUST dress to travel to and from a movie shoot or TV taping.

This dress code has already upset many of the wrestlers being forced to comply. Chris "Jericho" Irvine has in particular spoken out against it, stating the truth that the dress code takes away their individualism. When fans see wrestlers in public, they expect the wrestlers to look like themselves, not like cookie-cutter copies of one another. It would severely cripple the so-called "illusion of wrestling" to see wildly different characters like Chris Jericho, Spike Dudley, John Cena, and Triple H all dressed in the exact same uniform.

Not only has this code been instated, but most wrestlers are severely punished if they do not bow down to it. First offenses are a $500 fine, second offenses are a $1000 fine, and third offenses are suspension for an undisclosed period of time. Rey Mysterio, D-Von Dudley, and several other Smackdown Superstars have already been fined for not following this order. However, "higher" wrestlers, for instance, the Undertaker, have reportedly not been fined for refusing to follow the order, and it has supposedly been implied that should anyone else complain, they will suffer conseuences.

By signing this petition, we, the WWE fans, are requesting that the WWE dress code be abolished, to improve the morale of the wrestlers who work so hard to entertain us and to put money in the pockets of the men and women running the company.

Without the wrestlers, there are no fans, and without fans, there is no World Wrestling Entertainment, and happier wrestlers can only result in a better product overall.
