Wheelchairs in The Sims 3 sign now

Dear Maxis,

I've been playing The Sims ever since the first game was released back in 2000. I've owned every expansion pack for both Sims 1 and Sims 2, and have been enjoying the game immensely for over half a decade. I love the idea of creating myself and people I know, then putting them in the game. Something has been bothering me, however. I've used a wheelchair since I was born, and there's never been a wheelchair represented in The Sims. Therefore, I never really feel like I'm truly creating my in game persona. Sure, I can role play all I want, but it's not the same.

People with disabilities are highly segregated from society. It gets to a point where it's hard to go outside without having to endure dirty looks from others. If disabled people were present in The Sims, it would help us become more visible to the public. Kids that played the game would learn that their little Sims in wheelchairs are just as cool as their able bodied ones. I know it's just a game, but any little bit helps. The Sims is supposed to be a game about life, so it's a bit disheartening when you're not represented at all. It would be like if there were no black Sims in the game.

I made this request for wheelchairs in the forums back when Sims 1 was released. A Maxis employee responded and said they wanted to add this, but the technology wasn't there. When The Sims Online came out, I made the same request. Now that The Sims 2 has been out for a while and the third game is on the horizon, I'm humbly asking again.

I'm not asking for every illness and disability to be represented. I don't expect you to model the exact symptoms of cerebral palsy and spina bifida. This, we agree would be outside the intended lighthearted atmosphere of the game. I'm asking for a simple wheelchair object that could be worn the same way as glasses. You could add them in the character creator, or remove them later. This choice would be completely optional and never forced on the player. Only new adult created Sims could use the wheelchair, and children would not be born this way. A simple wheelchair body type would be excellent, and you can represent a whole scope of disabilities with that alone. You could give them their own fun interactions, like "Do wheelie" or "Do donuts". I've worked in the game industry, and I know that it would be difficult to synchronize the animations with standing Sims. I'm hoping that the work would be worth it, for both disabled and non-disabled Sims players.

The following signatures are from disabled and non-disabled people who, like myself, would enjoy wheelchairs in future Sims titles.

We would really appreciate it if this request was considered.
