Wal-Mart: Discourage Use of Plastic Bags sign now

To:
Mr. Lee Scott, Wal-Mart President and CEO
Mr. Dick Pastor, Wal-Mart Director of Environmental Management

According to the EPA, U.S. consumes over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps each year. And only 1 to 3\% of plastic bags end up getting recycled. Furthermore, it costs $4,000 to process and recycle 1 ton of plastic bags, which can then be sold on the commodities market for $32. Even if we did recycle them all, plastic bags are not cost effective. The only real answer is to re-use them.

As an alternative to plastic bags, we challenge Wal-Marts Sustainability 360 company pledge, and suggest that incentives be offered for customers to bring their own bags and discourage use of newly manufactured plastic bags. Specifically, we recommend that Wal-Mart charges a small sum for each new plastic bag used ($0.05). Any proceeds from a bag charge could then be donated to fund renewable energy research and other green solutions, thereby contributing to Wal-Marts commitment to the environment.

By signing this petition we declare our support for this environmentally responsible action both in function and in spirit.
