Vocational Tech Prep High School--Keller ISD sign now

To: Dr. James Veitenheimer (superintendent); Bob Apetz, Jarret Armstrong, Scott Brown, Dr. David Farmer, Linn Jencopale, Cindy Lotton, Randy Pugh (Keller ISD school board); David Vasquez and other honorable members of the Citizens Bond Advisory Committee

It is the responsibility of the Keller ISD to meet the needs of all students, not only those that are college bound, but also those students that are At Risk. We propose that Keller ISD should take a more proactive approach in bringing the district in line with other neighboring districts in the Fort Worth Metroplex by aligning with Tarrant County College and Weatherford College in their Tech Prep Program and Career Pathways Program. The Keller ISD should aggressively promote these opportunities by offering students these Tech Prep Programs. These programs can provide college credit towards an associates degree or certificate in a technical field; thereby, accelerating and enhancing the education in industrial trades such as construction, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, electrical, aviation mechanics, auto mechanics, engine repair and others. This program would allow a high school graduate the ability to enter the workforce as a skilled, self-sufficient productive member of society and/or have the option of continuing in a college program of study to further enhance their knowledge and skills.

Keller ISD has grown and it has become apparent that there is a need for a fourth high school to meet the growth in student population. We propose that Keller ISD designate this new high school as a center for Vocational Preparation with expanded Tech Prep Programs as recommended above.

One option is this school can serve all the Keller ISD high school population by providing an alternative career pathway and relieve overall student population at each high school. Students would be able to attend their home high school for the required core courses, school events, extra-curricular activities and graduate from that home school. A second option is that this school can expand or enhance those programs already in place at the other three high schools and serve as a magnate with a full academic component. (http://www.fortworthisd.org)

We seriously recommend expanded Tech Prep and Career Pathways programs be instated into the Keller ISD high school curriculum to meet the needs of ALL our students.
