Subject: HEALTH HAZARD ON PLAYGROUND

This letter wishes to address the pea gravel dust problem at the Vanderbilt Child and Family Center (Patterson street location). This dust is a big concern for the parents at our center. The minor but still troublesome problems include stains on our childrens clothing, shoes, and skin, not to mention the cost of ruined clothing for children and parents, shoes, car seats, and car upholstery. It is also terrible for a parent to feel they cannot hug their child at the end of the day because they are covered with dust. But most importantly, several children with chronic lung and skin diseases have had an increase in symptoms since beginning at the Patterson center. We are deeply concerned with the potential health impact on our children with the constant (7 months since opening) inhalation of the dust.
Many parents have already contacted Jennifer Smithson, Diane Neighbors and Mary Yarbrough regarding this matter on an individual basis. However, the previous solutions have not brought any improvement, nor have we been told of specific action steps (if any) being undertaken to solve the problem. We have only been given this vague statement: Together with Vanderbilt they are methodically working to find a resolution to our playground issues. However, we are hopeful that the methodical work to which you refer will now move on to a timely removal of the existing pea gravel and replacing it with a more suitable, cleaner alternative if the existing gravel cant be cleaned, and quickly.
We are asking you to take serious and quick action in coordination with parents to resolve this problem. If you are unable to do so, we feel we have no choice but to file a formal complaint with the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

We have all been very pleased with the care and attention our children have received at the center. We are confident that this issue can be resolved in a timely manner, without further escalation on the part of the parents who share this concern.

On behalf of the Parents of the Vanderbilt Child and Family Center, Patterson Street location
