UPHAM WOODS 2010 sign now

In their mission statement, the Monona Grove School Board says their purpose is that "while serving as a partner with the home and community, has as its mission to establish and deliver an ever-changing educational program providing all students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become life-long learners able to face future challenges." They say that in order to accomplish that mission, they must "provide all students with experiences that are both rigorous and relevant;" and " Provide students with experiences that link learning with real-life situations." The Board promises to "effectively promote the importance of our democratic principles that balance individual and societal rights and responsibilities" as well as "establish ways in which all stakeholders can work together to develop the trust and confidence necessary to openly communicate and focus the schools efforts on effectively dealing with complexity and conflict."

It is the intent, of we, the undersigned to persuade the Board, Superintendent Gerlach and the administration at Glacial Drumlin School to postpone the 2010 5th grade class trip to Upham Woods. There was not dialogue to "establish ways in which all stakeholders can work together to develop the trust and confidence necessary to openly communicate and focuse the schools' efforts on effectively dealing with complexity and conflict." By allowing all stakeholders the chance to "Effectively promote the importance of our democratic principles that balance individual and societal rights and responsibilities", the integrity of the annual Upham Woods trip by 5th graders would remain intact.

By moving the calendar date of the Upham Woods trip to Spring 2011, all stakeholders will be afforded the opportunity to "share in the responsibility for making the teaching and learning process effective." Dialogue will be shared by all stakeholders and a reasonable compromise and plan will be formed. This includes, but is not limited to, having the annual fall Upham Woods trip occur as an overnight trip in Spring 2011, having the annual fall Upham Woods trip occur as a day trip in Spring 2011, chosing an alternative venue that require less traveling, forgoing the trip as 5th graders and going in Fall 2011 as 6th graders with the intent to be an overnight learning, bonding and team building experience.
