On the CBC Radio website, Edmonton AM host Ron Wilson describes his show as follows: "Each morning Edmonton AM is like a snapshot of that day. The goal is to report on stories that matter to listeners and - just as importantly - to provide analysis and context."

Unfortunately, his show utterly fails to deliver on this promise. It is a mishmash of topics that compete for irrelevance and shallowness. Many interesting topics do not get any coverage and many irrelevant topics take up a lot of the programmes time.

An example of September 12, 2007: In the series Help Wanted about the pressing shortage of workers in Alberta, a report is aired about a Facebook page that has been opened, where Albertans commiserate about their drop in the quality of life since the whole oil-fuelled boom took off. The real-life problems that are being virtually discussed on this page cover a wide range: lack of housing, traffic problems, long waiting times in hospital, lack of child care, etc. Which pressing issue does Edmonton AM decide to cover? The long waiting queues at Tim Hortons!!

This is typical reporting for Edmonton AM: Just stick a microphone under peoples noses at random moments and ask them what is on their mind at that very moment. Edmonton AM rarely digs deeper into the question why things are the way they are. The programme seems to be completely out of touch with the problems people face. And if it happens to cover a serious issue, it always goes for the most trivial angle. Edmonton AM never ever starts a debate about possible improvements in the future.

Edmontonians do not want the trivia Edmonton AM presents to them. They long for:
decent news reporting on municipal, provincial and federal politics,
understandable business news (not just a rambling off of TSX quotes and gold prices),
international news,
in-depth interviews,
quality information about culture and sports.

They do NOT need a focus on gardening, restaurants and cooking. There are many other sources for that type of information.

It is high time Edmonton AM followed up on its mission statement: provide Edmontonians with the information they need to get ready for their day. Since most of us start work around 8.30AM, wed like to get that information, BEFORE we start our work day.
