Unity of Eidul Fitri and Hijriyah Credibility

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.

The Unity of Eidul Fitri and Hijriyah Credibility

For centuries Muslims all over the world celebrate Eidul Fitri in different days. For example, Eidul Fitri celebrated on October 23, 2006 in Saudi, Oman while in Indonesia and Malaysia celebrated on October 24, 2006.

But Indonesia also split. Some celebrate Eidul Fitri on October 23 (Islamic organizations such as Muhammadiyyah, DDII, and part of NU) while others (including Government, and most NU) celebrate it on October 24, 2006.

Of course this is very disappointing. It is not only shows that Muslims are not united, but also an evidence that Hijiriyah Calendar has no credibility as time reference either for religious events or business appointment. For example, if people in British want to meet people in Australia on Shawal 1 1427 H, what time they have to meet? Is it on October 23rd or on October 24th?

We cannot use Hijriyah Calendar since it is differ from country to country. We cannot use Hijriyah Calendar either on business or religious purpose since it is not perfectly defined by Muslims.

Most people in the world currently use Gregorian calendar which is also known as Christian Calendar. It uses the birth of Jesus Christ as a starting date. It is named after the Pope Gregory XIII who issued a decree dropping 10 days of a calendar so the calendar equal to the solar year.

So, do we as a Muslims will shut our eyes about this problem forever?

Allah says:

He is who appointed the sun a splendor and the moon a light, and measured for her stages, that ye might know the number of the years, and the reckoning. Allah created not (all) that save in truth. He detaileth the revelations for people who have knowledge. [Yunus:5]

And we appoint the night and the day two portents. Then we make dark the portent of the night and we make the portent of the day sight giving, that ye may seek the bounty from your Lord, and that ye may know the computation of the years, and the reckoning; and everything have we expounded with a clear expounding [Al Israa:12]

Allah created the sun and the moon so we could know the number of years and the reckoning/calendar.

Time is also important in Islam since many Islams obligation such as Shoum (fasting), Zakaat, Haaj, and Sholat related to time. So we have to be very accurate on calculating the years/days.

That they may witness things that are of benefit to them, and mention the name of Allah on APPOINTED DAYS over the beast of cattle that He hath bestowed upon them. Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor unfortunate. [Al Hajj:28]

Remember Allah through the APPOINTED DAYS. Then whoso hasteneth (his departure) by two days, it is no sin for him, and whoso delayeth, it is no sin for him; that is for him who wardeth off (evil). Be careful of your duty to Allah, and know that unto Him ye will be gathered. [Al Baqarah:203]

Muslims are one. Not divided:

And hold fast, all of you together, to the cable of Allah, and do not separate. And remember Allah's favor unto you: how ye were enemies and He made friendship between your hearts so that ye became as brothers by His grace; and (how) ye were upon the brink of an abyss of fire, and He did save you from it. Thus Allah maketh clear His revelations unto you, that haply ye may be guided [Ali Imran:103]

Islam knows no boundary or separation by many small countries. There is only one Islamic country that covers all the world.

Our prophet says If there is a leader, and then there is a man claims to be a leader too, kill the later This is to keep the unity of Islamic country.

In our prophets era, the Caliphates (Abu Bakar, Umar, Uthman, and Ali), and also the Omayyad kings there is only one Islamic Country.

There is a ghareeb hadeeth from Kuraib that says when he sent by Ummul Fadli to Damascus the people of Damascus saw the moon (of first Ramadan) on Thursday night. He returns to Madinah on the end of Ramadan. Ibnu Abbas says that they have to see the moon (of first Shawal) since the sight of the people of Damascus (of first Ramadan) is not enough for the people of Madinah and the prophet says so.

This single Hadeeths content is contradictory with the Quran verses above and also many hadeeth below which some also derived from Ibnu Abbas.

Ibnu Abbas said that an Arab villagers came to Muhammad PBUH and said that he saw the first of Ramadan (moon). Our prophet asked whether he believe There is no God but Allah and Muhammad and is His Messenger. The Arab said Yes Then Muhammad said to Bilal to tell people to fast the next day (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidzi).

This hadeeth shows that even if the people who sees the moon not live with Muhammad PBUH (from other places) so Muhammad have to asked him about his believe, if the people is Muslim and see the Moon, the other should fast the next day. It is the beginning of Ramadan. The same thing also apply to the first of Shawal!

Ibnu Umar saw the moon. He told it to Muhammad PBUH. Then our prophet fast and ask people to fast also (Abu Dawud)

Emir of Mecca, Al Haris Ibnu Khatib said Our prophet tell us to see the moon before we fast. If we cannot see the moon, we fast if two faid people testify that they see it (Abu Dawood and Daruqutni)

Those 3 hadeeth said that if other people see the moon though he live in other places, we should fast the next day or it is the sign of the first of Shawal. One single ghareeb hadeeth could not eliminate those 3 hadeeth and the hadeeth below:

Fast if you see the moon (of the first Ramadan) and break a fast if you see the moon (of shawal). If there is a cloud and the moon could not bee seen, make the Shaban 30 days (Bukhari)

I could understand if in our Prophet era/ancient time people in each country such as Saudi Arabia and Indonesia do the hilal (moon sighting) by themselves since it takes weeks or month from Saudi Arabia to tell Indonesian people that they already see the moon. It is too late already.

But know we have a very good communication. With telephone, television, email, or chatting in the internet we could tell people all around the world that we already see the moon in seconds! So, why should we disobey our Prophets order and destroy the credibility of Hijriyah Calendar by creating many Hijriyah Calendar versions in each countries? Divided, is it what we want?

If a Muslim already see the moon then it is the Shawal 1, we are forbid to fast because our Prophet prohibit it. It is not appropriate if other Muslims having Eidul Fitri while we are fasting.

Abu Said Al Khudri said: Our Prophet PBUH forbid us to fast in two days, namely on Idul Fitri and Idul Adha (Bukhari-Muslim). In other hadeeth mentioned that one who fast on Idul Fitri/Idul Adha has rebel against our prophet!

So this is a very serious matter. It is forbidden for us to fast on Idul Fitri. It is forbidden for us to have different Hijriyah Calendar in every country.

My suggestion is, all Islamic countries should send delegation to Madina or Mecca to see the moon. If they all see the moon, then tell it to the Muslims all over the world so we could fast and celebrate Eidul Fitri on the same day. So the Hijriyah Calendar has good credibility and could be used as time reference for business appointment or for religious purpose.

Why I choose Mecca or Medina? I choose Mecca because it is the place of Kaaba, the kiblat for all Muslims in the world. I choose Medina because it is the place where our prophet and his friends usually see the moon (Hilal).

I hope this idea is not a dust in the wind that vaporizes soon. I pray that all Muslims could fast and celebrate Eidul Fitri on the same day. I hope you can spread this message to your friends or put it in your blogs or homepage.

If you agree that Muslims should celebrate Eid at the same day and there is only one version of Hijriyah Calendar, please sign this petition.
