Ultrasound Insurance Coverage for Breast Cancer sign now

Dear Insurance Providers,

In an article published by the Associated Press about ultrasounds being able to detect cancer in breasts with denser tissue better than mammograms. According to one radiologist, as many as forty-nine percent of women have dense breast tissue. Mammograms can determine how dense a womans breasts are; those with dense tissue may want to seek an ultrasound exam in addition to a mammogram. Unfortunately, ultrasounds are not a currently accepted practice for detecting cancer and are not covered by insurance. This means that women will have extra expenses of up to $100 if she elects to have an ultrasound.

Mammograms for women with less dense tissue can catch 98 percent of cancers before they are large enough to be felt. On mammogram tests, tumors appear white and fatty tissue appears dark, but as tissue density increases it also appears white thus making it harder to differentiate tumor from tissue. For women with dense tissue who had mammograms, only 48 percent of the smallest tumors were detected. Combining mammograms with ultrasounds increased the detection rate to 94 percent.

Women who are at high risk for breast cancer or who have extremely dense breasts are urged to have ultrasounds in addition to mammograms. Mammogram sensitivity is only about fifty percent and because density does not affect ultrasounds, it is a nice complement to mammography.

We, survivors of breast cancer, friends and family of the victims and those concerned with this serious and often-fatal disease, urge your insurance provider to cover ultrasounds as a method of detecting breast cancer. It will result in more women being able to detect possible cancerous tumors without having to pay an extra hundred dollars each month. With more women detecting cancer early, the death rate from breast cancer will decrease thus resulting in saved lives. Please seriously consider this.
