UCF Football Stadium sign now

As the governing body of the University of Central Florida, the Board of Trustees is faced with a decision to grant permission for a Football Stadium to be constructed on the campus of the University of Central Florida. This is a very important decision, as it can never be undone. Generations of students that attend UCF will be affected in a variety of ways by the stadium.

The benefits of an on-campus football stadium for an intercollegiate athletics program are widely known. Several factors have been publically discussed, all which have brough this decision to the Board of Trustees.

While supporting the construction of a stadium on the UCF campus, as members of the student body, administration, and local community have done, the placement of the stadium on the UCF campus has come under debate.

A north location of the football stadium, near the current and planned athletic department facilities is the preferred location of many UCF students and supporters. The local community boasts a desire to have the stadium placed on the south side of campus, which is vehemently opposed by the UCF student body.

The local community would like to see the stadium placed on the site of the current intramural playing fields. By approving this location, the Board of Trustees would effectively end recreational opportunities that are thriving on the UCF campus.

UCF's growth has been phenomenal. In 1980, UCF had 34 teams participating in it's intramural flag football league. Today, UCF has 150 teams participating in it's intramural flag football league. The intramural sports program is in a space crunch, as dozens of additional teams sign up each year but are turned away as there are only 9 acres of field space and there is no room for more participation.

For this reason, UCF students have committed 6.25 million dollars in student funds to expand and improve upon the intramural fields, creating a master plan for a recreational park on the south end of campus. With UCF's growth, it is anticipated that over 300 teams will be participating in the Intramural Flag Football league once the field expansion is completed. For reference, the University of Florida currently has over 350 intramural flag football teams with over twice as much field space as UCF.

By allowing the football stadium to be placed on the south side of campus, the Intramural programs such as Flag Football, Soccer, Softball, Baseball, and many others would be devastated. Several universities around the country, such as Clemson, Florida State, and Kentucky currently have football stadiums next to their intramural playing fields. All of these schools have had issues as their fields were used as parking. Florida State had it's Intramural fields destroyed in 2003, and effectively cancelled the remainder of their seasons.

The location of the stadium on the North side of campus is preferred by the UCF student body. The student body is sensitive to the desires of the neighbors of UCF, however we are confident that the administration of the University of Central Florida will design and construct a tremendous facility on the north end of campus that will satisify all parties.

The location of the stadium on the south side of campus will do irreversible damage to the university's ability to be succesful in attracting and retaining students based on the known benefits of recreational sports for it's student body.
