Trust The People sign now

George W. Bush
Governor of Texas
Austin, Texas

We, the undersigned, respectfully submit the following request
to the consideration of George W. Bush, Governor of Texas:

In your campaign for the presidential election, culminating in the vote of the American people on Tuesday, November 7, 2000, you expressed eloquently and often that you "trust the people" of the United States.

The presidential election has come to a dangerous impasse. We ask you to remember those words, and to honor them, in our current electoral crisis.

As of the afternoon of November 8, 2000, you have earned 246 electoral votes, and the Democratic candidate has earned 260, with 270 needed to win in the electoral college.

The 25 electoral votes of Florida would be decisive. However, the vote in Florida, is so close that it is already being recounted only about three hundredths of a percent (0.03\%, or 0.0003) divided the original vote totals for you and your opponent. The vote in Florida, a state governed by your brother, is coming down to an incredible photo finish.

Unfortunately, when this photo was snapped, the camera was badly out of focus. There is real evidence of voting irregularities, which are unlikely to be convincingly resolved for weeks or months, if ever. Without any assumption of ill intentions whatsoever, we will probably still never really know the democratic will of the people of Florida to an acceptable level of accuracy.

In fact, the Florida vote for President comes down to a moral tie between the two leading candidates.

For the President of the United States to be chosen in effect arbitrarily, by a forcing a mathematically meaningless resolution onto a blurry photo finish, would be a moral atrocity that would undermine the fundamental authority in governance of our mighty democratic nation.

Therefore, we respectfully call upon you, George W, Bush, as a patriotic American, to practice the politics of unity rather than division, to trust the people by recognizing the Gore victory in the popular vote, and a Gore plurality in the electoral college, and thus to graciously resolve our national crisis by conceding the Presidency of the United States to the popular vote winner, Al Gore.

Under the U.S. Constitution, the electoral college actually decides each Presidential election. The seemingly archaic electoral college provides a human element empowered, though rarely called-upon, to resolve the occasional rare challenge to ethical meaning and moral basis that can still arise in the democratic process.

In its wisdom, the Constitution of the United States of America provides a mechanism to gracefully resolve just the kind of impasse now facing our nation. Please make use of the constitutionally mandated flexibility of the electoral college system, built in by the founders.

Honor the Constitution, honor yourself, and honor our democracy. Ask the electors of the year 2000 to honor your concession of the Presidency.

Trust the people.
