We the undersigned encourage the Democratic Party to support a presidential candidate we can all live with, a candidate who represents the values all Americans cherish.
There are at least three important reasons to put Tom Hanks on the ballot in 2008:
1. Republicans plan to change the U.S. Constitution to allow Arnold Schwarzenegger to run for President. The purpose of this act is to destabilize the Electoral College and to internationalize campaign financing so Pacific Rim countries (particularly China and Japan) that control foreign markets in the film industry will be able to use their influence to buy U.S. elections. The opposition party needs a candidate who will symbolize for voters what a homegrown, populist American president means to our country.
2. Tom Hanks is a unifying figure, a candidate both Republicans and Democrats can take pride in. He is a moderate who will look for solutions that address the needs of every American; namely, fiscal responsibility and comprehensive leadership. Mr. Hanks is judicious about his partisanship: he withdrew his support of Bill Clinton when he learned the details of the Monica Lewinsky affair not only because he respects marriage vows but because he could not condone the betrayal of a Democratic constituency that honored familial commitments in order to preserve the status of a party elite.
3. Tom Hanks embodies many of the qualities of another actor who became president: Ronald Reagan, who was called The Great Communicator. Reagan proved that communicators make great and popular presidents. Hanks, like Reagan, is a self-made success, a small town American who became wealthy and powerful through hard work and perseverance. If Hanks manages the White House as well as he has managed his own career, then we will experience a leader who knows how to put the best talents of people to work at the tasks for which they are best suited. His iconic value as a family man, a supporter of veterans, and a patriot excited by the brilliance of American scientific ingenuity will invigorate a sense of pride in our national identity.
We respectfully call for the Democratic Party to put Tom Hanks on the ballot in 2008.
