Time for Respect sign now

We the undersigned are opposed to the sexual exploitation of women. We believe that all people should be treated with respect, and that any activity that displays people as sex objects is degrading and dehumanizing, and is harmful to individuals and to society as a whole. The fact that it is mainly women who are the target of such treatment only multiplies the harmful effect. We are petitioning for changes in business practices and public policies to stop the degradation, and to start treating women as human beings with class and dignity.

We ask that companies refrain from using the sexual exploitation of women in their advertising.

We ask that movie and television producers dress actresses in clothing that portrays women as human beings worthy of respect and to please refrain from nudity. The point can be made without turning an otherwise good movie into a forum for porn.

We ask that the Academy Awards and other awards shows set a dress code so actresses cannot compete at exhibitioning their bodies on primetime television. Encourage actresses to be positive role models. The actors dress respectfully - ask the same of the actresses.

We ask that television stations and networks not allow programming or advertising that is disrespectful to women. We ask that movie theatres be more discriminating in what they allow to be shown in their theatre.

We ask that magazine publishers set a different standard one of class. Give young girls and women role models that promote self-respect and high self-esteem.

We ask that public officials not allow billboards, or other signs or storefronts to display women as sex objects or to advertise establishments that exploit women.

We ask that establishments that blatantly disrespect women such as so-called gentlemens clubs and gentlemens magazines think about what they are doing exploiting fellow human beings in order to make money (not unlike prostitution). Please think about the damage you are doing. There are many respectful ways of making money.

We ask that clothing manufacturers and retail stores consider the clothing they are making/selling and the effect it has on girls and women - the message these clothes are sending. We ask that womens undergarment retailers find positive, respectful ways to promote their clothing.

We ask that grocery stores, drug stores, and other stores that sell magazines think about what they are selling and the effect they have on people. At a minimum please do not display magazines at the register where customers cannot avoid the array of covers depicting women as sex objects.

We ask that sports teams stop exploiting young ladies as sex objects. Consider having both male and female cheerleaders - all dressed respectfully.

We ask for these types of changes peacefully and respectfully.
