Dear Paul House, the TDL Group Corp. and Tim Hortons,

We are calling upon Tim Hortons to end practices that encourage waste, such as double cupping, and the roll up the rim to win campaign.

We are very concerned with the amount of waste the fast food industry generates every year. We feel that it is not only a duty for citizens, but for corporations as well, to help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our landfills. There are more environmentally sound alternatives. Instead of double cupping to make it easier to hold a hot cup of coffee, you could use a paper sleeve. Instead of roll up the rim to win, you could give out little paper sheets where customers can peel off a layer to see the prize underneath. You can encourage non-disposable cup use by giving a more substantial discount for those who bring in travel mugs. These are simple ways to reduce waste.

Everytime I pass a trash can on any given city street in any province across Canada, I am reminded how wasteful Tim Hortons is because the trash can almost always contains a large number of Tim Hortons cups. In Nova Scotia alone, Tim Hortons products makes up approximately 22\% of litter. Is this the legacy you would like to leave? We understand that as a fast food chain, you will generate waste in the name of convenience, but the Roll up the Rim campaign is especially wasteful because it encourages people in-store, or those that would normally use travel mugs, to use the disposable cups in order to gain a chance at winning. Furthermore, people might buy multiple cups of coffee, instead of just one, and toss away the cups they do not need.

Please consider these concerns because Canadians are becoming more aware of our wasteful lifestyles and more concerned with the state of our environment. Why not be a leader in innovation by making changes now?
