CORNER BROOK, NFLD. - A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for seven years for killing 13-year-old Samantha Walsh in the tiny community of Fleur De Lys, Nfld.
Michael Lewis pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in adult court earlier on Thursday.
He was originally charged with first-degree murder, but his lawyer agreed to withdraw an application to transfer the case to youth court in exchange for the lesser charge.
Walsh was on her way home from her grandmother's house when she ran into three other teens. She was last seen riding away with one of them on an all-terrain vehicle on Feb. 6.
The girl's body was found on Feb. 23 in some woods just outside Fleur De Lys. She had been strangled.

The Crown says in its court documents that Lewis confessed 17 days after Walsh disappeared. But he claimed he choked her by accident during horseplay, then panicked and buried the body.
An autopsy showed the strangulation was the result of deliberate force.
The crime shocked the small community of 300. Fleur De Lys is located at the tip of the Baie Verte Peninsula in central Newfoundland.
The case has attracted much attention across the province. In June, Walsh's relatives collected 13,000 signatures on a petition that asked the court to deny bail for Lewis.

RCMP arrest youth in Samantha Walsh murder

FLEUR DE LYS, NFLD. - People in the small community of Fleur de Lys, Newfoundland are in shock after RCMP have arrested one of the town's youths in connection with the murder of 13-year-old Samantha Walsh.

Walsh was last seen on Feb. 6. She was on her way home from her grandmother's house when she ran into three other youths at the town's frozen harbour. She was last seen riding away with one of them on an all-terrain vehicle.
The RCMP found the body of the young girl late Wednesday night. It was near a cabin in the woods not far from the community of 300 at the tip of the Baie Verte Peninsula in central Newfoundland.
The driver, who police said was one of Walsh's friends, says he dropped her off at a bus stop across the street from her home.
But police say that Walsh's young friend can't account for his whereabouts for about an hour-and-a-half that evening and no one saw him drop her off at the bus stop.
"We're all in shock," the mayor of Fleur de Lys told reporters. Bob Traverse said many people in the town would find it hard to believe that someone who lived there could do such a thing.
Police are expected to charge the youth with murder.
Walsh had been missing for more than two weeks. Police originally thought she had run away but by last Tuesday evidence seemed to indicate that the girl had been murdered.
George Walsh, Samantha's father, said, "The last person that saw her, his timeframes, there is no justification as to what happened or where he went to after that, for an hour or hour-and-a-half. So that's why we always suspected foul play here in Fleur de Lys."
Samantha's mother, Millie, finds it hard to believe that someone in the community could hurt her daughter.
