The life of well-known student activist and political prisoner Ahmad Batebi is in imminent danger.

Ms. Najat Al-Hajjaji
Presidente of UN High Commission on Human Rights,

Imprisoned since 1999 for his involvement in student demonstrations against government sanctioned attacks on Tehran University students, Batebi has been serving the forth year of a 15 year prison sentence. Convicted on spurious charges of counter-revolutionary activity that were leveled against him after his picture appeared on the cover of The Economist, Batebi was initially sentenced to death. While Batebis death sentence was overturned as a result of widespread national and worldwide outrage over his case, he was not spared from torture and the horrible conditions in Irans notorious Evin Prison.

Batebi was recently released on furlough to seek medical attention for ailments he acquired as a direct result of hardships he has had to endure in prison. His release coincided with a short visit by UN Special Rapporteur Ambeyi Ligabo, with whom he and the family members of other political prisoners met on Saturday to discuss violations of Human Rights and the restrictions on free expression in Iran. Soon after meeting with Ambeyi Ligabo, Batebi left for Tehran University, telling his father that he would return home later that evening. He has not been seen or heard from since.

Given that hard-line militia supporters of the Islamic Republic have an history of abducting, torturing, and brutally murdering dissidents, Batebis disappearance has greatly worried his family, friends, and political activists. His familys appeals to the Iranian authorities have gone unanswered, and there is mounting concern that Batebi may lose his life if the regime is not pressured to take immediate and appropriate action.

We, the undersigned, hereby call on the Islamic Republic of Iran to take swift and responsible action in achieving the safe return of Ahmad Batebi. We also appeal to the Human Rights community to get involved in preventing further harm to a young political prisoner who has already suffered great injustice.
