The Kyoto Protocol; Our Responsibility to our Posterity sign now

In 1990, nations from all across the globe met in Kyoto, Japan, and signed a treaty called the Kyoto Protocol. The signatories agreed to reduce their carbon emissions by a certain amount by the year 2012. One hundred sixty-nine countries signed that treaty, and while the United States did sign it, we have not ratified the treaty, making our signature worthless.

Despite the fact that the United States of America, as a people, makes up only 5 percent of the entire world population, we produce 23 percent of the world's polluting carbon emissions. We are responsible for almost a quarter of the harmful carbon emissions and yet we do not commit to trying to remedy the situation. This is a travesty and must be addressed.

We realize that the United States may not be able to completely meet the standards set forth in the original Kyoto Protocol, but with the right action now, we could take a very crucial first step. I further realize that it is impossible right now to try and meet the 7 percent reduction in the next 5 years, but we can work to later be able to meet the standards of this treaty.

It is unacceptable that we did not ratify the treaty in the first place, but there is nothing we can do about that. Right now we need to focus on moving towards a new economy, one were energy is renewable/reusable, environmentally friendly, and readily available. Once we take this step then we can meet the Kyoto Protocol. If we dont meet the standards, what punishment will there be? Only good can come out of taking action, and this country, the rest of the world for that matter, needs our action.

The people of the United States care about this. If we do not take action now, we could soon be living in a global wasteland. Something must be done, and it must be down now. The people care, and you should too.
