The Genespage Fair and Balanced Moderation sign now

As regular posters and readers of your free message board, we would like to make certain acknowledgments:

1. We acknowledge that you are required to offer a free message board, open to fans from not only Mississippi State University but to fans from other schools as well.

2. We acknowledge that you are the head administrator and that you determine the rules and guidelines for the message boards.

3. We acknowledge that we have no rights, assumed or otherwise, and that by posting on your board, we agree to abide by the rules you have set forth.

4. We acknowledge that due to your busy schedule, there are other administrators and moderators in whom you have placed trust to provide a safe, enjoyable, environment for your members.

Having made these acknowledgments, we respectfully ask that you consider making a few changes, for the betterment of the board and for increased enjoyment by those users who do follow and respect your rules and guidelines.

We would like to ask for better and more consistent moderation of the message board. We recognize that there are several administrators and moderators in whom you have placed trust to maintain the board and keep a certain level of civility in place. However, there appears to be a great amount of inconsistency in monitoring the board. Many benign posts are being removed with no apparent reason, while other posts, many of which are offensive, are allowed to stay on the board.

Removal of some posts also disrupts the flow of the discussion taking place and causes confusion for the reader who did not see the original post prior to it's removal. Once a post is removed, the replies to that post often appear to be in response to another post, which may then offer an inappropriate response. We would like for those who are removing posts to also remove the replies to that particular post, so that the flow of the conversation is not interrupted.

In light of a recent thread posted on your board, in which a moderator stated that no derogatory comments would be allowed regarding Ole Miss, and the response of disbelief by most of the posters who read the thread, we would like to request that moderators be required to have the word "Moderator" in the tag line underneath their user name. The moderator in question had nothing in their user name or tag line to indicate that they were authorized by you to make such a statement. Many of your regular users felt strongly that if you had come up with this new rule, you would have posted it yourself and perhaps would have used a *tack* to stick the post at the top of the board for all to see. Hours after the post was made, the entire thread was removed. Posts of that nature make it difficult for readers and posters to find credibility with the moderator when there is no indication that the person is actually a moderator. Having a tag line that states the person is a moderator would have left no doubt in the mind of the readers of your board.

We would also like for you to consider holding moderators accountable to you for posts they may remove. We recognize that it may be a small inconvenience to the moderator to keep a record or log of posts removed, but it should remove any question as to why a post was deleted from the board. A simple record of the post removed and by whom, and sent to you would remove any doubt as to why a particular post was removed. It would also allow better control of the board as a whole.

In addition, we would like to request that any user, including MSU fans, who clearly are present on your board with the sole purpose of causing problems, be immediately banned and not allowed back onto the board at any point in the future. These persons contribute nothing to the enjoyment of the board. As regular posters and readers, we would like to request that your board not be allowed to turn into a *smack* board, but to remain a place where MSU fans, as well as fans from other schools, can turn for information sharing and civilized discussions regarding MSU sports. Clearly some posters come to the board with the sole purpose of stirring up trouble, offering nothing in the way of decent, intelligent, discussion.

Finally, we wish to make a strong statement to you that we appreciate you providing this service to all of us, and understand the great amount of responsibility that goes along with maintaining your site and message boards. We do not take the privilege lightly and wish to offer our most sincere thanks for your service, as well as for your hard work.

Thank you for your consideration of our requests.
