The English National Football Team Kit and National Anthem sign now

This petition will be presented to The Football Association (The F.A.) at the end of the 2007/2008 football season and hopefully the changes we'd like to see will come in to effect for the European Championships in 2008.

A lot has been said recently with regards to England's need to reclaim its national identity and instil pride within the English people. Over the years the lack of national identity in the England football team has become immensely frustrating with the team carrying more of a British identity than anything else. The national anthem played before all England matches is 'God Save The Queen', officially recognised as the national anthem of Great Britain. Our 'home' kit is white shirt, navy blue shorts and white socks with the shirts sometimes having red detailing. This kit again is representative of the colours of the Union Flag (more commonly known as the Union Jack).

At the Olympics or any other event where a British team competes the team will wear a kit coloured red, white and blue and 'God Save the Queen' will be played to announce them or to celebrate medal victories whilst the Union Flag is raised.

However, at the Commonwealth Games, when England , Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete separately, English competitors will wear a red and white kit taken from the English national flag, St. George's Cross, and the national anthem played is the officially recognised English national anthem, 'Land of Hope and Glory'.

When Scotland play football they play in the blue and white kit taken from the Saltire flag and play 'Flower of Scotland', Wales wear red, white and green taken from The Red Dragon flag and play Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (The Land Of My Fathers). So why is it that when England compete we associate ourselves more with symbols of Britain than we do England.

I understand English symbols have been tarnished in the past by far right nationalist movements and that certainly is not the basis for this petition. The kit worn by England for away matches of red shirt, white shorts and red socks is the favoured kit of the English fans and was worn for our proudest footballing moment, winning the World Cup in 1966. The pictures of the English team lead by Bobby Moore carrying the trophy provide a great sense of pride for English football fans and has been ingrained in the footballing world.

It is about time that the English team fully represented England, fans and players should sing the English national anthem, Land Of Hope And Glory, with pride and we should wear the colours that we fly so proudly on our flag. We implore the FA, make the England team English.
