The End of the CREB Million Dollar Award sign now

As you may or may not know the Calgary Real Estate Board of Directors has recently voted to eliminate The MLS Million Dollar Club Awards program.
The reasons cited in the below link:

http://www.creb.com/public/documents/2010_11_05_IC_Million_Dollar_Discontinuation_FAQ.pdf

I have been in Real Estate for 21 years and have valued the MLS Million Dollar Club Award as something to strive for, it is the representation of professionalism and hard work in our industry.
Our current board of directors does not feel this way, in fact, they have made the decision to eliminate this program without the sanctions of its membership.
If you do not agree with this decision it is time to make your voice heard loud and clear.

In our Board Member, Sano Stantes, most recent Blog I quote:

The award gained popularity in the industry, increasing the prestige of the award which was awarded to those elite few who produced the volume to achieve it. The criteria has evolved, but ultimately the award promotes members to produce a volume of business and does little to enhance the qualitative goals of the real estate industry

This statement is offensive to me and many Realtors who produce in high volume.
I disagree with this premise as there are many Realtors producing in low volume that do nothing to enhance the industry and their community.

And so, last week the CREB board made an insightful decision to progress past an outdated tradition and move members towards furthering the goals of our profession in fostering the quality of service rather than quantity of sales. The news was received with mixed skepticism, akin to the day we published the last catalogue of listed properties in favor of a computerised database, but the CREB board has received kudos from other boards across the country (many who have already dismantled their award) for having the courage to progress towards greater professionalism in the industry

It is arrogant for the board to presume that this is the direction that its members wish to take. To liken this decision to that of removing catalogues, is like comparing phasing out a type writer and eliminating the Pulitzer Prize they have no relevance except for the fact that they believe the MLS Million Dollar Club is outdated.

The whole blog can be read at: http://blog.sanostante.com/

There is a bigger picture to this decision, and it relates to the manor of how this decision was made, and the direction this Board of Directors wants to take the Calgary Real Estate Board.

This board is a co-operative, to remove this program without the sanction of the membership is wrong.

If Sano Stantes recent blog is representative of the attitude the CREB board of directors has, then I for one am going to stand up and be heard.

I have my own opinions and thoughts about the elimination of the MLS Million Dollar Club award of merit and am sure all you will too.

Yes, the program may very well need to be modified.

Hard work deserves recognition. To take away this honor I believe this is a slap in the face of those who have achieved it,as well as those who are working hard to reach that goal. I feel strongly that the board should reconsider there position on this ma

this is a milestone to be reached for realtors , keep the award and bring the cost of the dinner down and then watch the attendance go back up , maybe even have the broker owners promote it

This is an honored tradition - if not by the board, then certainly by our membership. The Million dollar Club is a benchmark that all realtors, old or new, strive to be a part of. . It is one of the few methods of recognition within our industry, that con

I personally think it is an absolute shame to cancel this award which is the only award left in our industry. Realtors work really hard to get there, especially in this market and economy as it keeps realtors motivated to achieve a goal and keeps them foc

It is a goal to strive for and an accomplishment each time we achieve it. Lets keep MLS Million Dollar Club.

To discontinue this award is to marginalize, discount and discredit the hard work, professionalism and integrity of the work done day in and day out by the outstanding realtors I am proud to work beside. We live and work in a sales driven industry - perha

If this action by the directors is about saving money on an awards night, eliminate the awards night, but keep the award. Change the name of it if necessary. If this action is about wanting to try and further "level" the playing field by eliminating one o

We should at least keep a Million Dollar Award list. It is one of the last things that gives a sence of community and connection between realtors

Poor decisions are made without members' input because the board gets chosen without many members' votes. Let's reduce voter apathy for next election.

Shame on the elected members (who of which I think we elected) to make an arbitrary decision without the consultation of the members they represent. The achievment of this award should always be held in the highest regard as a respected legacy for all of

I don't care about the gala as much, but people in commission sales are goal-oriented and work very hard for recognition.....I have missed it for a few years now but it's something I work toward every year and will miss very much!!!
