Temple University Smoking Restriction sign now

Dear President Anne Weaver Hart,

We, the students, faculty, administrators, and campus workers of Temple University, do not smoke, and have absolutely no wish to start. Therefore, we also don't want to smell like we go through two packs a day and have a very large distaste for inhaling any form of second hand smoke that harms our health. We urge Temple University for a policy to be enacted that reads: Upon observing the health and well-being of all students, faculty, administrators, and staff that enter Temple University grounds for education, sports, or work, smoking in public places will be restricted to 100 feet from public entrances in and out of University owned buildings on all Temple campuses.

We are requesting that smoking be restricted on campus for several reasons:

1. Health risks. Studies show that second-hand smoke is just as bad as smoking and can lead to several health risks as heart disease, emphysema, and lung cancer as well as other cancers in the lips, tongue, check, and throat. The risks of these diseases go up when constantly walking through smoke going in and out of buildings or simply working around those who smoke, even outside. Second-hand smoke can also trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks, which according to the proximity of the heaviest of smoking currently on campus, would happen just before a student walks into a building and therefore most likely right before entering class.

2. Garbage and waste management. By restricting where smokers can smoke, concentrated areas can be easily cleaned and managed rather than an entire campus. The University can save time and money by concentrating areas where smokers can smoke to manage the waste of discarded cigarettes and help keep the University campus neat, clean, and presentable to prospective students, parents, presenters, promoters, and investors. The separation can also help with controlling the ashes that are released from cigarettes that pollute the air and irritate the eyes, nose, and throats of students.

3. Fire hazard prevention. For every 25 feet there are readily available trash cans or recycling bins on campus. When cigarettes are not put out on the ground or discarded in special ash tray/concrete cigarette bins, cigarettes are thrown in these trash cans that contain flammable materials and have the potential to start small fires near or even inside University buildings. A separation between places to smoke and public entrances greatly reduces this risk.

4. Lastly, its promoting a green environment. Philadelphia has been acclaimed by several environmental groups for its effort to clean up the city environment and city air. By initializing a smoking restriction, Temple University will continue this trend of increased environmental awareness and promotion thus establishing Temple University as an institution committed to healthy living in a healthy environment.
