Taboo on Broadway DVD sign now

TABOO CLOSED ON BROADWAY FEBRUARY 8, 2004 AFTER 16 PREVIEWS AND 100 PERFORMANCES AND WE THE UNDERSIGNED WANT TABOO TO LIVE FOREVER! Taboo "freaks" and admirers from everywhere have come together to sign and present you with this petition requesting the Broadway performance of "Taboo" featuring the original Broadway cast be released on DVD.

Taboo is a musical portrait of a brief but remarkable era - London in the early 1980s. An ever-shifting time that sparked a rebellion among the youth that found its expression in flamboyant fashion and decadent nightlife. Taboo focuses on two young men - Leigh Bowery , a brilliant, anarchic perfomance artist/designer and George O'Dowd, a young, rough-edged boy who arrives in London and - once swept up into exciting artistic climate - becomes the exciting crossover star of the scene as Boy George. Both men's stories are played out against the fantastic background of Taboo, the club that had come to symbolize the mad excess and decadent fun of 1980s London.

TABOO featured critically-acclaimed music and lyrics by Boy George. When the musical opened, Richard Zoglin of Time Magazine called TABOO "Vivid, uncompromising and often funny. Boy George's music and lyrics are a triumph, among the best I've heard on Broadway in the past few seasons. Ten years from now, I can see a cult developing around the music for TABOO . . . Count me a charter member. One of the Year's Ten Best!" Hilton Als of the The New Yorker said "Boy George has a canny understanding of the needs, hopes, and dreams of his audience. In TABOO, one can hear how his songwriting talent has deepened, and one can see that his feel for the business of show hasn't faltered. It's astonishing, really, that the young man who made the world bop to "Karma Chameleon," in 1983 could have written the haunting aria "Talk Amongst Yourselves" or the structurally complex quintet "Out of Fashion," but there they are - songs that break your heart with their bravado and quivering self-awareness." Nationally-syndicated columnist Liz Smith said "The heart and soul of TABOO are Boy George's thrilling, witty and powerfully moving lyrics. It's the greatest original score for a musical in years." TABOO was recently nominated for 4 Tony Awards (including Best Original Score for Boy George), 5 Drama Desk Awards (including 2 for Boy George - Best Music and Best Lyrics), 2 Outer Critics Circle Awards and 3 Drama League Awards (including Best Musical).

Unfortunately, due to Taboo's premature closing, not everyone got the opportunity to experience the "magic" on stage. And, for those of us who were lucky enough to see the show, there remains an aching desire to "re-live" the extraordinary talent and unique performances of the cast on video. Many of the cast members have become "break- out" Broadway stars as a result of this production. The impeccable cast, musical score, artsy fashion, talent and heartfelt messages have captivated us beyond our imagination. It would be a tremendous loss to allow this show to disappear from the hearts and minds of the many fans this show has attracted. A DVD release of the Broadway Taboo performance could renew interest, attract more fans and "open doors" for Taboo's return in some form down the road. Taboo could very well become the next Rocky Horror Picture Show; only these freaks "Dress To Kill".

"I know what would look good on you ... me!" -- Raul Esparza as Philip Sallon
