Swartz Creek, MI, Skate Park sign now

As legal adult residents of Swartz Creek, MI, we wish to help support our community by agreeing that a skate park would be a great addition to Elms Road Park, not only for our kids, but for the whole community.

The City of Swartz Creek needs a publicly funded public-access skate park. Countless boys and girls in and around the city are currently banned from riding skateboards in public areas, including on sidewalks and the bike path downtown. This is an activity that a rapidly growing number of kids love! Understandably, the ban is in effect to protect not only the children themselves, but other individuals and the property of the city and local businesses, too. A skate park in Swartz Creek would be a good place for skateboarders and for those using rollerblades and scooters to practice their sports. A skate park near the downtown area would give the children a place to go to practice and play safely rather than encouraging them to break laws and deface the property of others. A local skate park would also require less travel and inconvenience to adults and parents who currently drive their kids to Clio or Grand Blanc for these activities.

Elms Road Park is the perfect place for Swartz Creek not only to exhibit existing, traditional recreational facilities, but also to create new opportunities for our evolving community. It is centrally located, not so close to individual residences where the skate park might create too much noise, and has plenty of space available for the skate park. We need to continue to give our kids a place to safely do what they enjoy doing: They live here, too!

Ideas/Suggestions:
1. Building the park: why not get local skaters to pitch in? Even if they dont have a lot of money, building the park will need time and energy donated. Local skaters who help build the park (min. hours on project required) could receive a discount on use of park, like 1st year free.

2. Charge admission to the skate park for maintenance. Local and non-local day passes ($2, $5), monthly passes ($8, $10), quarterly passes ($10, $15), and annual passes ($25, $35) could be available. Passes might be purchased at the Swartz Creek City Hall. Monthly, quarterly, and annual passes may be in the form of a laminated tag that could either be worn with a clip on the skaters clothing or on a lanyard around the skaters neck. (poll the kids/parents in the area)

3. Require that each skater or his/her legal guardian sign a liability waiver, to be updated annually, or post easily visible signage saying all skaters play here at their own risk (like at a pool with no lifeguard.)

4. Require that children 12 and under be accompanied by an adult, for safety purposes.
