Sustain Diversity in Engineering at UC Berkeley sign now

Dear Alumni and Friends of the University of California,

The offices of the Black Engineering and Science Students Association (BESSA), the Hispanic Engineers and Scientists (HES), and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) in Naval Architecture Building are being taken in favor of conference rooms for construction purposes, compromising the functionality and livelihood of its tenants. The Deans of the College of Engineering on the University of California, Berkeley campus have notified the student groups of planned construction in nearby Davis Hall, and the students will be displaced for the duration of the work, projected to be a minimum of three (3) years. The appropriation of the three student offices which cater to the needs of the traditionally underrepresented students of the University of California as well as the means by which the appropriation has commenced have demanded the student groups compile a contractual agreement in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure the fulfillment of verbal obligations made by the Deans. Written into the Memorandum are obligations by all parties to ensure that the many academic, cultural, and philanthropic programs the student groups organize survive while the groups are displaced. It is for reasons of good faith by the representatives of the College of Engineering, and of historical record for current and future students of the University, that this petition and Memorandum of Understanding be recognized by the College, as they are recognized by the following petitioners (undersigned), the affected students, and the related community.

For specific information on the Memorandum of Understanding, as well as construction and displacement updates, contact the student groups using the following web link:

Respectfully,

Clifton Lewis Jones, BESSA Alumnus
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, 2001
