Support the Marines in Berkeley sign now

We, the undersigned, are citizens of Berkeley who call on our local government to serve us, not the interests of Code Pink activists. While we may not agree with the war in Iraq, we honor the troops and their service. We say the Marines are welcome in Berkeley. Tom Bates and the city council do not speak for us.

We support full freedom of expression for Code Pink, but we do not think they deserve preferential treatment. Code Pink should conduct their protests without help or hindrance from the local government. We rely on the military, not Code Pink, to defend our freedom. It is the military, not Code Pink, who will be the first to respond with critical humanitarian aid should a natural disaster strike the Bay Area. We find it hypocritical in the extreme that free speech should be reserved exclusively for antiwar activists and not for those who actually defend our freedom.

We call on the city council to encourage business downtown, instead of encouraging noisy protests. We believe that business owners in downtown Berkeley should not be penalized by their elected officials for their proximity to the Marine recruitment office. The community's interests will be better served with a steady revenue base than by the officially encouraged presence of protesters.

We call on the city council to take the following actions immediately:

- Withdraw the preferential parking space that the city has given to Code Pink.
- Cease and desist official harassment of the Marines in Berkeley.
- Let the voters decide by ballot initiative in November whether or not military recruiters will be welcome in Berkeley.
