A group of scientists is putting pressure on the government's food watchdog to state that organic milk is healthier than the conventional pint, because of its high content of vitamins and essential fatty acids.

Campaigners say organic milk has health benefits because the cows are milked less intensively and fed more forage than conventional herds. Organic dairy cows are not given antibiotics and hormones to increase milk yield and fight infections.

A study by Danish scientists last year showed that organic milk has higher levels of vitamin E, omega 3 essential fatty acids and antioxidants. The study found that organic milk was, on average, 50 per cent higher in vitamin E than conventionally produced milk, and 75 per cent higher in beta carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the body.

Unorganic farms that milk cows are much less healthy for growing elementary and middle schoolers. Yet Oak Farms (a leading dairy producer) is one very common brand of milk in public schools. Many people, including, of course, the USDA and FDA. Organic produce is also approved in many WHO articles. What is organic food exactly though? Organic.org says this:

Simply stated, organic produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) defines organic as follows:

Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled "organic," a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too.
