Support NDTV's Campaign in bringing Justice to Jessica Lal sign now

After years of battling, visits to the courts, interrogations of the murderers, witnesses, etc the verdict was out, All 9 murderers are acquitted due to lack of evidence. Possibly Rs. Nine Crorers must have changed hands in order to acquit the murderers in the sensational Jessica Lal murder case.

And now maybe it is time for the common people to raise a voice at least before your highly respected office, in order to acquire justice for the victim. And pray that our voice be heard, unless it is barred with the barrack of corruption again.

Our demands are simple:-

1) Your Excellency, must order for a full re investigation of the case
by the police or the C.B.I in order to book the culprits and bring
justice to the victim.

2) Your Excellency must order a special inquiry of all the police
officers involved in the case and book those guilty of corruption
for abetment of the murder.

This petition is in collaboration and support to the petition made by NDTV to your respected office.

Background of the case

NEW DELHI: A model earning some extra money by working as a bar tender at a swinging party that was throbbing with people is shot point blank by a person who is refused a drink. Many must have seen this act of wanton criminality. And yet, seven years and a wobbly prosecution attempt later, all the accused walked away free on Tuesday.

Thats the shocking story of the celebrated Jessica Lal murder on the night of April 29, 1999, at the tony Tamarind Court, a restaurant owned by socialite Bina Ramani that has since the fateful night downed shutters. Its difficult to tell today which has been more shocking the ramp models murder or the sloppy manner in which the alleged killers were sought to be brought to justice.

This was despite the fact that almost immediately after the killing the police identified the murderer as Manu Sharma, the son of a former Union minister. It seemed an open-and-shut case. The police also had eye-witnesses to the killing.

But when the trial began, the police case turned shaky as key witnesses turned hostile one after another, and the few who didnt became inconsistent with their versions. It was apparent that the case against Manu Sharma and his two alleged accomplices Vikas Yadav, son of Rajya Sabha member D P Yadav and a cola company executive Amardeep Singh Gill was turning progressively weak. And finally on February 21, 2006 The Court acquits all accused of all charges.

"Its a terrible feeling that you couldnt do anything to the people who murdered your sister.

We tried our best but probably even the best wasnt good enough," says Jessicas elder sister Sabrina, describing their seven-year struggle as "uphill, exhausting and very long".

Sabrinas father, Ajit, is in the house but he is completely oblivious of whats going on. "He has suffered several strokes and has lost his memory too. He has no clue about what has happened today," says Sabrina. She tells us that her mother, May, was diagnosed with cancer just a few days after Manu Sharma, the main accused, was let out on bail. She passed away about six months later. Ajits health began deteriorating after her death, and a few months later, he had his first stroke.

Sabrina says, was expected. "Every family member had some hope to cling to till the verdict came out. But practically speaking, we had predicted that this would be the outcome since the case had only been weakening for the past seven years," she adds.

Role of cops was under a cloud

The then SHO of Mehrauli police station, Surender Sharma who failed to stop the restaurant from serving liquor without licence became the investigating officer of the case.

According to what the eyewitness accounts, Sharma came to Tamarind Court that night accompanied by four men, one of whom was politician D P Yadavs son, Vikas Yadav.

He initially had a tiff with Binas daughter, Malini Ramani. Sharma offered her Rs 1,000 for a drink but she declined. Soon after, the incident occurred. It was alleged that Manus friends, Amardeep Singh Gill and Alok Khanna, who worked with a leading soft drinks company, helped him flee. Bina Ramani claims that her Canadian husband chased Sharma on foot.

Jessica was taken to Aashlok Hospital and from there to Apollo Hospital, but was declared brought dead there.

The PCR was informed about the incident much later. When the cops reached Tamarind Court, they found that the blood stains had been wiped off. It was also alleged that Jessicas clothes had been changed before she was taken to the hospital. The police claimed Sharma shot Jessica with a .22 bore pistol. The cartridges were bought by him a few weeks ago from a shop in Karnal.
