Students Standing For Boundary Rights sign now

Our organization is called SSFBR which stands for, Students Standing For Boundary Rights. Our organization was started to push towards a change in the boundary settings for schools. Our point of question is, "If children are not comfortable in their learning environment, how will they learn?" this question goes along the lines of parents, tax paying citizens in PG county, not having much of a choice in their child's school of attendance. This being, we've come up with a resolution. We believe if a child has a good source of transportation to and from school, they should be able to attend their school of choice (except with extreme differences in distance). In Washington D.C. students get to and from school on their own, meaning metro, walking, parents, or other, so if they can do it, why can't we? What makes us different form D.C. students? In Maryland, we have school buses, half of them already have routes along the outer boundaries for another school, especially if the school has a program in which students set for another boundary are able to attend. If a school bus already has that route and stops close to a students home, what will it hurt to have them ride that bus? Of course, there will have to be organization in the way this is all operated, so we've come up with a plan for that as well. Towards the ending of every school year, a time window for parents to put in all necessary paper work and transfer information for their child/ren should open, and towards the end of the summer, the window should be closed in avoidance of over and under crowding of schools. I understand at some point there will be an issue of "unfair advantage," but there can't be one if everyone is informed of this time window in advance. The time window should be opened and closed to the convenience of the school system so that: Everything runs smoothly on the first day/ weeks of school, every student has a schedule, and so no one is confused of what it is they are to do come time for the re-opening of school in late August. The window also, should be opened and closed to the convenience of the parents. The opening time should be given at least 2 weeks in advance so everyone has the fair advantage of getting all the proper forms for transfer in order, once the window opens, its up to them to take care of the transfer on their own time. Should their school of choice already be filled, they can either be recommended to another school that has not yet been filled, or their child can stay at their boundary school and try again next year. We're trying to make this as "fair" as possible and hope to see progression.
