Students Against Slow-Throttled Housing Internet sign now

Students who live on campus in UH housing are now having their Internet speeds throttled down to slower speeds; however, students can pay $30 more per month in addition to the expenses of living on campus for faster Internet. Apparently they even gave us full speed to try; I didn't notice any difference.

UH must not focus on MONEY, but rather on keeping up with TECHNOLOGY like other universities with blazing fast Internet. Internet was developed for and by colleges.

If the age of INTERNET INFORMATION is here why are we being throttled? Give us full speed and upgrade UH Internet as a whole.

:::: Quoted from a Facebook GROUP ::::

Recently (March 1, 2007), the University of Houston's Residential Life and House IT Department has decided to throttle our internet speeds to an even lower speed, but for those who desire above snail speed they can pay extra per month to get faster Internet.

Apparently they have been running "network infrastructure tests" in which they "had allowed all of our residents in Moody Towers, Quadrangle, and Cougar Place to utilize our Premium service package, which enabled the residents to utilize up to 1Mbps upload and up to 3Mbps download" and now we are back to the Basic slow package.

I never noticed any "Premium" increase in speeds in my internet this semester or last. YouTube still required any video to buffer for ~30 seconds before playing without skipping. Normal browsing was persistently slow on any site. My roommate and I constantly run web speed tests everyday to check the current speed and it has been the same.

So if "Premium" which is $30 more a month is the same as what we just had, forget it.

Don't we already pay for Internet here at a UNIVERSITY? Shouldn't it be fast and cutting edge since this is where the Internet was developed?

Even if you don't live on campus at UH, JOIN!!! UH removed tsunami and upgraded UHWireless to "vernier" from UHVPN so that they could throttle our WI-FI Internet in the library and elsewhere.

Why is UH attempting to throttle our speeds instead of facing the real issue of upgrading our Internet to that like UT and other large universities where the Internet is blazing fast? And where WI-FI is located EVERYWHERE on campus? What is the issue then?

MONEY. UH simply wants to put it off as long as they can. UH needs to catch up with technology. If the age of INTERNET INFORMATION is here why are we being throttled?

SPEAK OUT!!! We can make a difference.

    The only thing this is doing for the school is giving it even more of a commuter campus stigma. Throttling the internet connection is one of many things that is driving students off campus.

    It's not fair that we would have to pay for our internet! Especially when we pay a lot just to live on campus and slow internet would hurt us if we're taking quizzes online and we cannot submit it on time.

    It is time to upgrade the internet. I run bandwith tests all the time at Cullen Oaks and the connection is equivalent to ISDN. Worse than the worst kind of DSL.

    we pay enough money as is, why should we be expected to pay $30 for what we already have?
