Students Against Rising Textbook Costs sign now

We the undersigned unite in protest to the lack of responsibility from the Salt Lake Community College faculty in regards to publisher profiteering.
Textbook publishers produce new editions more frequently than necessary, and require students to buy unnecessary bundled items in order drive up prices. Erwin V. Cohen, a former publishing industry executive, said Publishers release new editions of successful textbooks every few years, not to improve content, but to discourage the sales of used books by making them seem obsolete.
Publishers get away with their profiteering because the final purchaser of their products has no competition to choose from. In every course a student takes curriculum is based on a textbook the professor/department has chosen. There are no other options made available; if you take the course you buy the book. You buy the book, and the hardly ever to be used cd-rom, and the study guide, and the workbook, and the answer key, and anything else the publisher can think up comes at great cost to you, the student. Faculty, pay no regards to costs when choosing a textbook either.
We do not dispute the fact that publishers are out to make a profit. We do not dispute the necessity of high quality content in our textbooks. We the undersigned dispute the lack of options regarding our purchases. Some alternatives to expensive textbooks are to ask for textbooks alone rather than bundled, customized textbooks that could be utilized for longer periods of time (increasing used textbook use), online textbooks, etc. Faculty members are the one deciding where your hard earned dollars are to be spent, they are the middlemen between the student and the publisher, and so it is to them where we must plead our case.
