Students Against Rape Stories (S.A.R.S.) sign now

The Community Read book selected for 2005 in Canandaigua is called Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This book, along with sending messages to Canandaigua students that slap the Afghanis in the face, also gives detailed accounts of child rape. Kite Runner does a fine job of categorizing Afghanis into three separate categories: those who rape, those who are raped, and those who do nothing about it.

Im sure our country and Canandaigua City Schools would have no problem with students reading that Middle-Eastern countries are filled with terrorists who love to inflict pain on each other while others watch and do nothing, because it justifies our occupation in any country that we feel we need to imperialize at the time by belittling that countrys occupants. The United States is an ethnocentric, racist country as it is. There is no need to pump hate into the veins of young readers.

Well, Ive spent that last couple of days pondering the circumstances in which rape should be allowed in school and they really havent come to me yet. Theres probably a reason for that. Introducing rape into high school literature will accomplish a number of different things:

1.) People will be more open to discussing rape and as a result think that it is not that bad.
2.) People will mock the rape and real people that have been raped will be less likely to come forward, because of fear that they will be mocked.
3.) People will justify the rape because of the raped boys ethnicity, which promotes discrimination and hate.
4.) People will be more afraid of Afghanis because of their portrayal as raping bullies or terrorists.
5.) People will want to hurt Afghanis because of this stereotype.
6.) Rape will be on the minds of the students.

Rape being in the heads of students could result in a number of things. People that fear or are upset by rape will be upset during not only class discussions in English, but during lunch periods and in the hallways, because everyone is reading and discussing the book. People that constantly hear of rape in a school setting, where everything else is ridiculously censored, will begin to belittle the actual severity of a rape.

Remove this book from the CA curriculum. The book is intended to convey the ideas of friendship, betrayal, and the price of loyalty, but many readers would say that the one theme that stands over them all is: If youre in Afghanistan, youd better watch your ass!
