Student Body Concern Over Dennis Burke sign now

Dear Dean Hazlett,

One of the elements of the small liberal arts college that we respect and adore is its potential for a strong community and careful evaluation of all student affairs and concerns. Never in my time at Bowdoin do I expect to be overlooked, considered a number, or be set as an example. However, we feel that this regard to the individual is being significantly forgotten in the case of Dennis Burke. Although we are certain that there are technicalities and details of which we are unaware regarding his situation, we strongly believe that Denniss actions in the past year do not merit a suspension or time away from Bowdoin.

Every time Dennis is punished, his offenses have decreased in severity, showing that Dennis is beginning to understand the boundaries he must comply with while attending Bowdoin. Although we as well as Dennis (who does not endorse our petition) do not deny his need for taking responsibility for his actions, we feel that absence in any way from Bowdoin would only prove detrimental to Dennis and in no way make our school a safer place. His commitment to Ursus Versus, Longfellows, and his job at our dining halls shows that hes dedicated to making our campus a more pleasant and happy place. His contribution to the Bowdoin community far outweighs his offenses against it, and taking him from this community would only prove to be damaging to Dennis and the school.

We in no way endorse Denniss actions. But we do hope that in light of the low potential for Denniss influence on the social order at our school, the possibility of his suspension will be reconsidered. We all know that you are often very understanding, considerate, and down-to-earth with your verdicts. We therefore hope that your administration will not let us down in our expectations of a fair and circumstantially considerate decision, of which will be decided on the basis of Denniss strong character as well as his increasing awareness of appropriate social conduct. He has already learned and changed so much here, and we hope that his social education will not be suspended.
