Stop the Russian Stereotypes! sign now

Very frequently in comedy and in the media, Russians are portrayed with little thought and with no consideration. A typical Russian is potrayed with a vodka bottle, wearing winter clothes, with a hat that bears the Soviet star. ALong with that, a Russian can be portrayed as drunken, ill-mannered, racist, poor, stupid, and with a dumb but entertaining accent. I do not see why this is happening. The common myth that allRussians do nothing but drink vodka, or even that Russians are all comunists(sic) is far-fetched. The typical theory that it is traditional for Russians to drink vodka everyday, is an inaccurate one. A rather big percentage of Russians do not drink. Many Russians actually make an ethical decision to not drink spirits at all. Drinking was discouraged during the Soviet Union regime, and that impact still remains. Russians don't drink vodka everyday. Most of them drink vodka during Holidays. Also, most Russians drink responsibly.

The idea that Russia is always cold is stupid. Sure, Siberia is a very cold place, but mostly during winter. When the snow melts, much of Russia looks like an average landscape, and sometimes the summers in Russia can be very hot. The idea that Russians are "commies" is old and foolish. First of all, the Cold War ended, and there are exponentailly less communists in Russia. Although Communism was a failure as a political system, it brought great changes to Eastern Europe and Asia, like mass-literacy, advanced technology, and it actaully helped reduce poverty. The Russian Imperialist times were terrible for the middle and lower classes. There was poverty, unemployment, and even sometimes segregation in the Russian empire. So the idea that Communism was an "evil system" and did no actaul benifits is also far-fetched.

I really hate those people who listen to the media and ask Russians like me "Are you a commie?" or "Do you drink vodka?". Its rude and offensive. And what also disturbs me is the mockery of Russia's partriotism. Sure, Russians do say stuff like "For the Motherland", but not like every frikken 8 seconds. Trust me, Americans are just as partiotic as Russians.

In any form, Russian Stereotypes are stupid. Don't listen to stuff you hear on TV. Why don't you go to Russia yourself and see for yourself what Russia is like? Any Russians or anybody who supports this petition just sign, stop the Russian sterotypes.
