Stop the Massacre of innocent civilians in Ethiopia sign now

The ruling party in Ethiopia has again opened fire on peaceful demonstrators killing 44 people and wounding hundreds more. On Nov 1, 2005 police using live bullets, attacked demonstrators protesting vote rigging during the 15- May-2005 national election. On the following days the government brought in hundreds of heavily armed riot police and special army units who used machine guns and grenade indiscriminately killing and wounding civilians throughout the city of Addis Ababa.
Those who died were mostly high school students, but government troops were also shooting anyone who came out of their house women, children and the elderly who were not demonstrators, but going about their lives peacefully. The wounded included a 7-year-old girl, who lost an eye after police hit her with a baton, and an 11-year-old boy who was shot in his stomach when he stepped out of his home.

Currently police are searching houses, rounding up rights activists and members of the opposition. Leaders of the main opposition, Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) and newly elected members of parliament were detained along with over one thousand of opposition supporters. Those arrested include Mr. Hailu Shawl, President of CUD; Professor Mesfin Woldemariam, former chair of Ethiopian Human Rights Council and Dr Berhanu Nega, mayor elect of Addis Ababa.
In June of this year over 33 peaceful demonstrators were killed by government troops in a similar manner - bringing the total killed by government troops to more than 77 civilians this year. We Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia living in North America and Europe condemn this use of excessive force by the Ethiopian government troops on unarmed civilians.

We request the immediate release of all opposition leaders and opposition supporters in Ethiopia. We ask the government of Ethiopia to respect the rule of law and the will of the people as shown in the recent election.
We plead with the President of United States, the Prime Minister of United Kingdom, the European Union and the United Nations secretary general to immediately intervene on behalf of the Ethiopian people and stop this massacre of innocent civilians.
