Stop Shia Killings in Pakistan sign now

Dear General,

The sad and gory events of Ashura in Quetta should have acted as awakeners for your government -- specially for those parts of it directly responsible for protecting lives of the people.

Alas, it is clear that supposedly responsible members of your government are not at all ashamed at having been caught sleeping on the job yet again. Any half self-respecting government would have had the grace to pack up and go home in the face of such massive repeated failures in its duty to protect the lives of citizens who, in the words of newspaper 'Dawn', are the continued targets of " ... a one-sided massacre of unwary mourners."

We see that the federal interior minister, the whole government of Balochistan, and the Inspector General of Police in Balochistan are shamelessly continuing in office. The police officers directly responsible for killing of many mourners in so-called "cross-firing" (how did police bullets supposedly fired upon the terrorists on balconies hit the mourners at street level?) have gone scot-free despite eye-witness accounts confirming their involvement in the massacre and despite their being named in FIRs.

If the goverment has failed, the opposition's role is no less pathetic. The MMA is part of the problem rather than the solution. As for others, the murder of one Sindh MPA drew loud protest from the opposition, and so it should have, but the contrasting relative silence on the massacre of almost 50 mourners is deplorable.

We continue to hear trite repititions of promises by you and members of your government to 'find' the culprits and give them 'exemplary punishment'. If this is really the best your government can do, it better not interfere in what is clearly beyond its intent and capability to handle.

If, however, you are serious about taking steps to control and reverse the menace of target killing of Shias, here are some steps for immediate implementation:

1. The federal interior minister, the government of Balochistan, including the governor should be sacked forthwith, and Balochistan's Inspector general of Police removed, so as to send a clear and stern message to all others not to sleep on the job.

2. The police officers responsible for firing on the mourners be arrested and tried immediately in anti-terrorist courts (ATCs).

3. The mullahs who advocate 'takfeer' of Shia Muslims be jailed immediately and tried in ATCs, and barred from holding membership of parliament or legislatures. Sitting members of assemblies and other famous 'scholars' who have published the fatwa of takfeer of Shia Muslims include Maulana Samiul Haq, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor, Maulana Maula Bakhsh, Maulana Muhammad Ayub Khan Binori and Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai.

4. The arch-terrorists of Sipahe Sahaba and Lashkar-e Jhangvi who are already under arrest, namely Akram Lahori, Malik Ishaque and Hafiz Shahid -- all of whom have accepted killing Shia Muslims, shown no remorse, and promised 'more of the same' if they get the opportunity -- should be publicly hanged forthwith as per sentences already handed down by ATCs. This will act as a strong deterrent to prospective travellers of this short-cut to heaven.

Shia Muslims were at the forefront of the struggle for creation of Pakistan under the leadership of our Quaid-e Azam. However, the incompetence of rulers in handling the increasingly gorier episodes of Shia killings -- and more so their indifference -- are an insult added to the festering wound of terrorist acts. The result is that despite their demonstrated love for the country, Shia Muslims are being forced into alienation in this land.

History has recorded the events culminating in 1971 resulting from alienation of a large section of our population. We hope that patriotic Shia Muslim Pakistanis do not continue to recieve this cruel and indifferent treatment at the hands of our rulers, and are not further forced into alienation in this land for the glory of which they have, and will hopefully continue to, shed their blood.

May we, on this first anniversary of the still unsolved terrorist incident of killing of 10 namazis in Malir, Karachi hope that you have the guts to act as asked by us above??
