Stop Project to Widen Intersection at Peachtree Dunwoody Road and Windsor Parkway sign now

Tiberio "Tibby" DeJulio, City Council Representative, District 5
John F. McDonough, City Manager

Ref: Traffic Study for the Peachtree Dunwoody Road/Windsor Parkway Intersection

The undersigned represent neighborhoods along the Peachtree Dunwoody Road corridor southbound from the Glenridge Connector to the City of Atlanta boundary line as well as other adjacent Homeowner Association (HOA) representatives and individuals of common purpose. Under this petition, our collective efforts will be coordinated as a single organization under the name of Peachtree Dunwoody Road Corridor HOA, otherwise known as PDRC HOA.

The City of Sandy Springs has initiated a traffic improvement study at the intersection of Peachtree Dunwoody Road and Windsor Parkway for the purpose of increasing traffic capacity and flow through our neighborhoods. As our Representatives, you are advancing plans without any input from the community to add additional turning lanes to the intersection as well as extend other lanes which will require the acquisition of the perimeter land buffers of the surrounding neighborhoods.

We the undersigned are petitioning you to stop immediately any consideration by the City of Sandy Springs to widen the Peachtree Dunwoody Road and Windsor Parkway intersection. Increased commuter traffic through this intersection and destruction of the landscaped buffer around the impacted neighborhoods will create additional noise and air pollution, decrease esthetics, and therefore, reduce the quality of life as well as home values. A number of homes are currently less than sixty (60) feet from the existing roadway. Since the City of Sandy Springs boundary line extends only seven hundred (700) yards on both the eastbound section of Windsor Parkway and the southbound section of Peachtree Dunwoody Road, DeKalb County and City of Atlanta commuters will be the primary beneficiaries of an expanded intersection at the expense of the surrounding PDRC neighborhoods.

Too many neighborhoods have already been sacrificed and families uprooted when GA 400 was built to serve as the main commuter artery in the area. The goal of the PDRC HOA is to have the Peachtree Dunwoody Road corridor remain an area of neighborhoods in its natural state without commercial presence or increased traffic capacity. Any transportation project whose purpose is to enhance the capacity of Peachtree Dunwoody Road to accommodate more traffic and serve as another primary commuter artery will be vigorously opposed.

In summary, this petition requests that you stop the current lane expansion component of the traffic study and redirect its resources to more urgent traffic problems. In addition, we expect our elected and appointed Representatives to protect the PDRC neighborhoods now and in the future from similar transportation projects that will only encourage additional commuter traffic.
