Stop NB Education Cuts sign now

The education system in New Brunswick is once again under attack
from Mr. Kelly Lamrock, Minister of Education. This time, it is not
French Immersion, but drastic cuts to literacy programs including
the lay-off of many (or all) of the school Librarians and
intervention workers. In Mr. Lamrock's own words,

"Research demonstrates that student achievement increases with
access to effective school libraries," Lamrock said. "School
libraries matter and make a difference. They promote reading and
literacy skills, as well as information skills, and provide the
foundation for lifelong learning."

"School libraries are a critical component of the education system,
and we want to ensure that our school libraries fully play the role
that they can play in the education of our children," the minister
said. "Through our Charter for Change, we will establish five-year
targets for strengthening our school and public libraries." (2006)

These positions could be preserved by cancelling the Innovative
Learning Fund, as the NB Teachers Association have suggested, and
redirecting these funds to keep front line education positions in
place. ILF Grants have contributed 4.9 million dollars into
the Anglophone sector alone since 2007.

If, as Mr. Lamrock has stated, "Kids Come First", we demand the New
Brunswick Government to restore funding to the critical area of
School Libraries and literacy for all children.
