Stop Lancor, Help OLPC sign now

Please read this careful.

Some times ago

Nigeria has officially ordered and paid for one million of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) devices, according to the Nigerian Vanguard newspaper.

The deal is the first actual order for the project that aims to provide Linux-powered laptops to children in developing economies.

Production of the devices will start once five to 10 million have been ordered and paid for, according to the OLPC website.

But there is someone who wants to do money from this

Lagos Analysis Corporation (LANCOR) is going forward with its patent infringement lawsuit against the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project. LANCOR has obtained a temporary injunction against the distribution of the OLPC XO laptop in Nigeria and is seeking a permanent injunction as well as $20 million in damages. LANCOR, which describes itself as a dynamic technology solutions provider, is privately owned by Nigerian entrepreneurs and is incorporated in Massachusetts. The company claims that OLPC has infringed on RD8489, a design patent held by LANCOR that relates to multilingual keyboard functionality. LANCOR also claims that OLPC purchased LANCOR's KONYIN keyboard product in order to reverse-engineer the driver source code so that it could be adapted for use in the OLPC XO laptop.

"The willful infringement of our client's intellectual property is so blatant and self-evident in the OLPC's XO Laptops," said LANCOR's legal representative, solicitor Ade Adedeji, in a statement given last month, "we will have no problem establishing the facts of our client's case against OLPC in any court of law.

What everyone should know:

Question: Which language or languages are needed for localization for use by children in Nigeria please?

Answer: Nigeria's official language is English along with Edo, Efik, Adamawa Fulfulde, Hausa, Idoma, Igbo, Central Kanuri and Yoruba, but there are more than 250 languages spoken in the country, Ethnologue even lists 510 spoken languages. (...)

What are WE asking:

- We ask that LANCOR stop to take advantage of this no profit organisation. Nigeria has PAID for laptops that cant be distributed to poor people for a virtual and invented infringement.

- We ask that LANCOR understand that the first Alt-Gr Keyboard was invented LONG TIME AGO and that its not patent pending.

We finally ask that EVERY LAPTOP will be distributed and not blocked anywhere for a ridiculous reason, ITS NOT CORRECT that poor people have to wait for courts decision that may take a lot of time to decide.

Lancor is not only trying to steal money, but they are also STEALING time that children would have used to LEARN.

Thank you for your time spent reading this and sorry for every translation error. My best regards. Flavio.
