Dear Mr. Gates

The world is aware of the immense contribution you have made, through Microsoft, to information technology. Your innovations have made complex mathematical calculations faster and more accurate to the nth degree, benefiting science and technology in a big way. The advent of Microsoft has triggered a revolution on the Internet. Information, for the first time in world history, is moving back and forth at the speed of light, saving lives, advancing knowledge and creating opportunities.

You have also involved yourself, graciously, in activities to help the down-trodden, the sick and the infirm. Every one is aware of your phenomenal contribution to the effort to eradicate AIDS in the developing world.

You are perhaps not aware of another area in which you have helped different people reeling under the shadow of loneliness. We refer to the bridge area of Zone.com. Thousands of senior citizens in their 70s and 80s, some wheelchair bound for life, men and women who get no social exposure in real life, have adopted the bridge section of the Zone as a way of life. This remains the only social contact they have with other human beings. Many net friendships spring up among the lonely souls, comforting each other, filling up the vacant hours of loneliness. They cut across the dividing lines of national borders; transcend the barriers of race, language, religion etc. Many also benefit from the therapeutic effect of bridge, a game which keeps the aging mind active.

Against this back-drop, Mr. Gates, the decision of Microsoft to discontinue the bridge site has come as a crippling blow. You are a great human being, and Microsoft is very humane in its approach. If you, or one of your nominees, spend a little time, incognito, in the bridge section of the Zone, you will be amazed at what the bridge area means to those who participate. Once you know, you can make whatever decision you feel is right, the many thousands of us who play bridge on the Microsoft Gaming Zone will accept it. Our only request is that you see for yourself before you decide.

Dropping bridge from the Zone.com will render thousands emotionally homeless.
