SMU Community's Interest in a "Green Powered" Campus sign now

Dear President Turner and Board of Trustees,
As you may know, SMUs first green designed building on campus, the Embrey Engineering Building, will also become SMUs first green powered building when its construction is completed and LEED (green) certified. However, SMU will not receive any recognition from our purchase of clean, renewable energy for the Embrey Building or from similar purchases for any other campus building that is built or remodeled in the future in accordance with LEED certification requirements. Coincidentally, there is a chance for SMU to receive regional and national recognition because there has yet to be a large University in the southwestern United States to join the Environmental Protection Agencys Green Power Partnership, which is designed to recognize institutions and assist them with media promotion for their notable commitments in purchasing renewable energy.

Therefore, if SMU made such a commitment and joined the partnership, the School of Engineerings Environmental and Civil Engineering Dept. as well as Dedman Colleges Environmental Science Program would likely benefit considerably by becoming more competitive with other schools in attracting prospective students and professors. In fact, SMU would also distinguish itself among our operationally competitive schools and even our benchmark schools by joining the partnership, which could make us the first large University in the entire Southwest to do so, demonstrating our support for clean energy development in Texas and elsewhere. Moreover, the environmental benefit would be comparable to removing at least 253 cars from the road or planting 391 acres of trees each year, of which the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of SMU would likely be proud to be a part.

On the other hand, there is a premium on renewable energy, but improving energy conservation practices would help offset the marginal costs associated with purchasing renewable energy, as will be demonstrated by our new Embrey Engineering Building. You probably agree that SMU is a training ground for future leaders dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and forward-looking innovation, and because SMU is such an institution within a state that will significantly benefit from the expansion of renewable energy development, we as such have both the responsibility and capability to join with other schools and:

1. Make a commitment to join the Environmental Protection Agencys Green Power Partnership by adopting a policy to supplement a portion of the campuss total energy consumption with clean, renewable energy within one year from now.
2. Switch 3\% of our energy use from traditional sources to renewable energy sources as required within the first year of membership in the program.
3. Investigate the feasibility of becoming a Leader in the partnership and this region of the country by continuing to increase the campuss use of renewable energy sources until 12\% of its total usage is green, which could be accomplished as early as 2011 (SMUs centennial celebration year) with a 1.8\% annual increase of green energy purchased, or as late as 2015 with a 1\% annual increase.
