Service Cuts at the Library and Archives of Canada sign now

This petition opposes the service cuts implemented September 2007 at the Library and Archives of Canada. In particular, these cuts will have an adverse impact on graduate students studying Canadian history. The decrease in the number of hours the consultation room is staffed results in a loss of 2.5 hrs of productive work per day, which amounts to 12.5 hours per week (since researchers can only take digital photographs of documents and copy microfilm during staffed hours). Ottawa is an expensive city in which to do research and students like to get in and out of the archives as quickly as possible. Therefore, the cuts place an increased financial burden on graduate students, most of whom have limited access to money for research travel.
