Say NO to WestPac LNG on Texada Island sign now

On July 31st, WestPac LNG Corp. announced its proposal to build a $2-billion LNG terminal on the quiet and rural Texada Island. Once slated for Prince George, this proposed relocation is causing justified concern for the residents of Texada Island. WestPac LNG president Mark Butler stated to cbc.ca that "officials in Prince Rupert were notified about the company's change of plans in February". Texada Island residents had absolutely no idea of any such plans until the 31st of July. Union members of BC Hydro are also strongly opposed to the plans (The Province, Friday Aug 03, 2007), which insinuates that this project has not just offended island residents. Many people have publicly written newspaper and online blogs, stating their opposition to the gas terminal.

This project, which is said to be a "proposal", is so precisely detailed that it has obviously been in the works for a while, with no input from island residents:
"Facilities at the Texada site will include

- a marine jetty and berthing facility

- onshore LNG storage tanks

- a natural gas-fired power generation facility

- interconnection with the existing Terasen natural gas pipeline from the mainland to Vancouver Island on site

- a short 500 kiloVolt interconnection line to the existing BC Hydro transmission line between the mainland and Vancouver Island." (http://www.zibb.com/article/1417751/New+CDN2+Billion+LNG+Terminal+Power+Plant+Announced+for+Texada+Island)

This plant will cause environmental and visual pollution, environmental degradation, a decline in real estate, cause unnecessary risks in tanker transports, and other detrimental consequences. I, in short, do not see 300 temporary jobs as something that will outweigh the cons of this project.

As a resident of Texada Island, I do not wish this project to be approved. As a person living in Victoria, Nanaimo, Courtenay Campbell River, or many of the other cities on the tanker route, I do not wish this project to be approved. As concerned citizens, we have the right to deny WestPac the privilege to create unjustifiable risks, ruin our water-front views, and, most importantly, our environment.

Say NO to WestPac LNG on Texada Island.
