SAY NO to BENECO TREE CUTTING "development" at Baguio City South Drive 1.2 hectares forested land cum watershed sign now

TO: Mayor of Baguio City Hon. Mauricio Domogan, all newly elected City Councilors, Baguio City Congressman Hon. Engr. Bernardo Vergara and to Mr. Gerardo P. Versosa, General Manager, BENECO and/or BENECO Board of Directors

This is a call to all people of the Philippines / all Cordillerans of the BLISTT - (Baguio, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba & Tublay) to remain vigilant and take an active part in the protection and preservation of our environmental heritage in particular the BENECO [Benguet Electric Cooperative Inc.,] area/site development along Baguio City South Drive, Forbes park cum watershed.

1. The Benguet Electic Cooperative (BENECO) acquired a 1.2 hectares property in the tune of Php (Philippine pesos) 183.4 million in Baguio City South Drive which is thickly forested and forms part of the overall green and scenic images of Baguio City Forbes Park that faces the site. The proposed BENECO developments will entail the cutting of many centennial-aged/mature trees to give away for the construction of buildings, stockyards, parking spaces and other BENECO structures. These big structures constructed in such a wide space will blight the green character of Baguio City South Drive and adjacent Baguio City Forbes Park. The type and scale of development are not compatible with the location and overall character of the site. BENECO has already started occupying the property and it is a sight that previews the things to come.

2. Baguio City South Drive is a major historic and scenic road of Baguio City that pleasantly meanders through one of its remaining forested areas. It is relatively unspoiled by traffic, air pollution and congestion. The developments to be introduced by BENECO along this area will generate heavy traffic and serve as a congestion magnet, hence destroying what little that remains of the green and scenic roads of Baguio City.

3. We recognize the need to increase BENECO's capacity, reliability and effficiency in the delivery of its services, but we also recognize that these objectives can be achieved with the least possible social and environmental cost. The toll to Baguio City's environmental character that will be exacted by BENECO development along Baguio South Drive will be irreversible and unjustifiable as this will contribute to jeoperdizing the socio-economic survival of Baguio City.

We urge the BENECO to explore other sites for the aformentioned developments that will not generate as much adverse impact as the present location. We strongly suggest sites within the BLISTT (Baguio-La Trinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay) area, but outside of Baguio City. This is an opportunity for BENECO to spur the growth of the city's neighboring towns while pursuing its corporate mandate.

We call Government Offices, Non-government Organizations, cause groups/people to join our call for BENECO to stand-down on their development plans at Baguio City Forbes Park and relocate to other sites/areas which will not cause environmental/ecological destruction.
