Save the Tarkine sign now

In light of the recent developments in the Tarkine area, a group of members of TIN The International Network has decided to initiate a petition to stop three proposed new mines. The Tarkine is an expansive wild area in North-West Tasmania with Australia's largest temperate rainforest. The mines would be established in the Keith River and Nelson Bay River areas as well as in the rainforest at Mount Lindsay. The open cut mines are proposed to mine magnesium, iron ore, tin and tungsten.

The Australian Heritage Council last year confirmed the Tarkine in north-west Tasmania met three of the criteria for inclusion on the Federal National Heritage Register. The report confirmed the National Heritage values of the Tarkine and recommended a 434,000 hectare permanent National Heritage Listing. However, the Australian Government approved the drilling in an area of the Tarkine forest that contains a rare magnesite karst system of global significance. Mining this area would have a devastating and everlasting effect on the immediate environment.

Therefore, TIN - The International Network is urging the Australian Government to reconsider allowing the mining of the Tarkine. We further urge the Australian Government to implement the Australian Heritage Council's recommendation to add the Tarkine area to the National Heritage List.

I am signing because I consider the current political push is for mining without due consideration to the years of Natural and Cultural Heritage values being either conveniently ignored, or deliberately delayed in the application of comprehensive protecti

We need to save The Tarkine along with all other great forests and biodiversity hotspots of the world. They are the lungs of the earth and are needed for the survival of our species and the ecological integrity of this planet.
