Save The Statler Hotel In Detroit, Michigan sign now

Originally built in 1914, The Statler hotel had 800 rooms all with a complete bath, a first in Detroit, and a year later had an extension built on to create 200 more rooms bringing the total to 1000 rooms. The Statler also was the first hotel to have air conditioning in the nation. Since its closing in 1975, it has sat proudly on its location, but today it is approved for demolition. Demolition is set for August of 2004 and will cost an estimated 7 million. We want Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC), Detroit Historic District Commission (DHDC), City of Detroit, to halt the demolition immediately and permanently, and have the hotel restored for future use, as the Book-Cadillac is currently being renovated and it even had more rooms then the Statler. The Statler can be restored, it doesn't have too many rooms, and its floor-plans are no problem. Please save our historic Statler Hotel!
