Save The Setmurthy Northshore sign now

Dear Readers,

For the past couple of years, Setmurthy Woodland near Cockermouth has been used extensively by both walkers and mountain bikers. At first there was a conflict, but gradually things got better, and for the past two years there has been a perfect cooperation between the walkers and the mountain bikers at Setmurthy.

The reason for this petition is that this week (11/07/2005) the Forestry Commission were not happy with the North Shore in the cross country loops, and so decided to chop it all down. There has been hundreds of hours spent building over two years by more riders than you can count on your hands and feet, and all this work has now been destroyed. The North Shore had been built in places where it was needed, where there was a ditch there was a bridge going over it, rather than it being clogged up with logs, when a tree had fallen over the track, we built a bridge going on top of it, instead of simply hacking our way through the tree. All of the North Shore had been built with safety and fun in mind for all standards of riding, it had all been chicken wired over and had a layer of water protector on it to prevent corrosion. It had all been built strongly and securely, mostly using materials from the forest to give it a natural look. All the North Shore had been built to IMBA standards.

The reason the Forestry Commission ripped down our lovely trails is because down south in a forest they run, a small child was killed attempting something past his limit, and his mother took the Forestry Commission to court for 3.9M. The Forestry Commission does not want that to happen here. We believe that if the Forestry Commission realises the large volume of skilled riders, beginners and large family groups as well as walkers that use the woods and enjoy the trails, they will allow us to rebuild the North Shore.

So far at Setmurthy there has been no bad accidents, and we believe the reason for this is our expertise in building safe trails. Every time we go to Setmurthy there are new riders, from all over the UK, and I have yet to hear a story of a bad accident. Thousands of riders visit Setmurthy every year, and with a perfect safety record it must be saying something.

So please, if you ride or walk at Setmurthy, or you feel like posting your comment, please sign this petition so we can forward it on to the Forestry Commission.
