Save the Russian Department at UNSW sign now

We, the undersigned students and staff of the University of New South Wales and members of the Russian community in Sydney petition you to ensure the continuation of Russian Studies at the University of New South Wales. We strongly appeal against the withdrawal of the courses RUSS1111 Introductory Russian 1 and RUSS1112 Introductory Russian 2 in 2006 and also the possible "phasing out" of ALL courses in the Russian Department of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

We believe that Russian language and culture have a significant place in contemporary Australian society and believe that Russian is a relevant language to teach at UNSW and thus disagree with the possible COMPLETE closure of the Russian Department.

We also disagree with the decision NOT to officially inform students, including those who have already chosen Russian Studies as a Major in an Arts Degree or may choose to do so in the future, of the possible changes and why they are taking place. In this way the students were not given the opportunity to voice their dismay at the possible end of Russian Studies at UNSW.

We urge you to take action to keep the courses in Russian Studies running in 2006 and into the future.
