Save the Rt. 4 Tenplex Movie Theater in Paramus, NJ sign now

I have created this petition in the hopes of saving the Rt. 4 Tenplex Movie Theater, located on 260 East Highway 4, Paramus, NJ 07652, from demolition. It is currently owned by AMC Theaters, but was formerly owned by Loews, Cineplex Odeon, RKO, and Stanley Warner Theaters. The Tenplex is due to close its doors for good on May 24th, 2007, and will be demolished shortly after that, to make way for more retail stores.

The Rt. 4 Tenplex is one of the last traditional movie theaters left in Northern New Jersey, featuring orchestra style seating. It originally opened in 1965, and has been the premier movie theater in Paramus over the past 42 years. In the 1970s, the Tenplex was one of the first theaters on the East Coast to present movies on extra large screen 70mm, and it was the first theater in NJ to present Star Wars: Episode I in a fully digital format. The Tenplex started out with a single theater when it opened, but was eventually enlarged to house ten screens. Unlike many more modern multiplexes, which feature a large number of theaters with relatively small screens, almost all of the theaters at the Tenplex feature very large wide screens. This is the main reason why it has always drawn in legions of New Jersey filmgoers, who want to see blockbusters like Star Wars, Jaws, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Superman, The Matrix, or Batman on an extra wide screen with a great sound system.

Many Bergen County residents, such as myself, spent a lot of the so-called "Wonder Years" of our youth at the Tenplex. I saw my first film there as a toddler, got my first kiss there as a teenager, and spent a lot of great times there with family and friends over the past few decades. The thought of losing this theater and its history really upsets me. Its one of the last non-assembly line theaters left in Northern New Jersey, that still has a special aura about it.

I'm hoping to use this petition to prevent the Tenplex's destruction by appealing to AMC Theaters, The New Jersey Historical Trust, the borough of Paramus, and any other organization that I can think of. Possibly, the theater could be sold to a private citizen willing to keep it open, another theater chain, or AMC Theaters will reconsider closing it.

AMC Theaters states that the reason for eliminating the Tenplex is because they have built a new theater at Garden State Plaza and don't need both. Most residents of Paramus didn't want the new theater built at Garden State Plaza, and various lawsuits were filed to prevent its construction, with some still currently pending. The new theater will be a 16plex theater with a large number of tiny theaters with small screens and a corporate feel to it. Adding a theater to the already parking challenged Garden State Plaza Mall will cause traffic havoc on Rt. 17, along with parking problems throughout the year, especially during the holiday season. If both the Tenplex and the new theater were kept open, it would alleviate part of this problem, as filmgoers would have two locations to chose from. This is why I'm hoping AMC realizes their mistake and keeps both theaters open. Hopefully, if I get enough people to sign this petition, there will be a chance to save one of the last great movie theaters left in this area.
