Save the Black Pigs Dyke sign now

Dear Mr. Keyes,

I object to the planned extension to the quarry at Ardkill More mountain, Carrickaboy, Co. Cavan and the continuing despoilment this will cause to this local landmark and archeological site. Two hundred yards of the linear earthworks known as the Black Pigs Dyke have being already destroyed by this quarry operation and work such as top soil removal, to extend the quarry which began on April 20th 2004 without planning approval, has added to what is now a local blight on the landscape.
I also call on Cavan County Council to ensure the future protection of the many archeological monuments in the Denn/Carrickaboy area by having this locality declared a Special Heritage Site under the terms of the County Cavan Development Plan to include such sites as the Black Pigs Dyke at Ardkill More, the Banagher Burial and Ritual complex and the St. Davnetts site at Corrawillin, Lavey.
Cavan County Council has clearly set out its commitment to the protection of heritage sites in its County Development Plan 2003-2009, yet the above monuments have being omitted from the current inventory of Special Heritage Sites chosen by the council. The Denn area has a high number of sites of archeological and historic importance within a small catchment.
Prehistoric sites such as the two thousand year old Black Pigs Dyke at Ardkill More and the Neolithic complex at Banagher must be protected from development that would undoubtedly prejudice their integrity and value. As the County Development Plan has stated this must include the setting that is the development of the area adjoining or abutting the site or item.
The Ardkill More site is the only surviving section of the Black Pigs Dyke in County Cavan, while at Banagher there are the remains of one of only two known passage tombs in the county.Another tomb at Banagaher has being completely destroyed in the past few decades.
We strongly urge Cavan County Council to act without delay to ensure no further damage is caused to sites in the Denn locality.
