SAVE NEWTON CORNER BRANCH LIBRARY PETITION

July 2008

To Mayor David Cohen, Library Director Nancy Perlow, and the Board of Trustees of the Newton Free Library:

We, the undersigned Newton residents and supporters of the Newton Corner Branch Library, respectfully request that you reverse your decision to close our Newton Corner Branch Library. This branch, formerly called the "Boys and Girls Library" is located in a small village that serves the children from Underwood Elementary School and Bigelow School, all part of this school district. Our branch library is convenient to public transportation and is across the street from an elder housing. People with disabilities depend on our library for books as well as social community programs. Tai, our librarian, has been the center of our Newton Corner library and Chaffin Park for a couple of decades. She is not just a librarian, she is a very well loved friend. Newton Corner would not be the same without our branch library and our loved librarian. We have many treasures of letters from children and adults of what this has meant in their lives. We wish for you to understand the beautiful legacy of John Chaffin back in the 1800's, when he donated this library in a will to forever remain as a library.

With full continued help of the local volunteer grassroots nonprofit group, "Friends of the Newton Corner Branch Library and with continued community involvement, we believe we can make excellent strides toward helping our branch library grow. We have joined with other library communities to share ideas with Save Our Branch Libraries coalition. Some of have over the years volunteered for 1000's of hours planting daffodils around the library, volunteering in the library, writting letters of support for well over a decade. Many of our Newton Corner library supporters have won several awards from Newton Pride, and been supported by our local Alderman and other community volunteers. We have embraced library programs with Tai such as "Story-Telling", book clubs and lectures. We believe we can grow with more after-school programs from our abutting school neighbors. Our library provides a quaint and safe community library place for children and adults with disabilities, and accessible services to all in the community. We ask for our to give us the chance to make the Newton Corner Branch Library a premier example of success and model for all communities that seek to help their libraries grow. We ask that you reverse your position to close the Branch Libraries.

Thank you for your consideration.
